GRE ID requirements in Canada (2026)
Canadian citizens can use a passport, driver license, provincial ID card or military ID. Non-citizens need a passport, or a Permanent Resident Card or refugee document (Notice of Decision, IMM1442), plus a secondary ID if that document lacks your photo or signature.

The checker catches what this page can't: a name that doesn't match your registration, an expiry date, or a missing supplemental ID.
Accepted
- Passport
- Citizens: driver license, provincial photo ID or military ID
- Non-citizens: Permanent Resident Card (IMM1000), Notice of Decision or Refugee Protection Claimant Document (IMM1442)
Not accepted
- Other documents for non-citizens without a passport
Rules that apply everywhere
- Your first and last names must match your ETS account exactly, accents aside. A middle initial is optional.
- The ID must be valid on test day. We treat an ID that expires on the exam day itself as expired.
- Bring the physical original: no photocopies, scans or photos on your phone.
- The ID must show your name, a recent photo and your signature.
Questions
Can I use my PR card for the GRE in Canada?
Yes. If the card shows your photo and signature it's enough on its own; if not, bring a secondary ID such as a driver license or student ID.
