GRE ID requirements in the EU, Schengen area and GCC (2026)
In your own country, ETS accepts a passport, national ID card, driver license, state/province ID or military ID. If you're a citizen of an EU, Schengen or GCC country testing in another one, your national ID card can replace your passport, but only if it shows your name, photo, date of birth and signature. Anyone else needs a passport.

The checker catches what this page can't: a name that doesn't match your registration, an expiry date, or a missing supplemental ID.
Accepted
- Passport
- National ID card
- Driver license (in your own country)
- State/province ID card (in your own country)
- Military ID (in your own country)
Not accepted
- A national ID card without your signature, unless you also bring a supplemental photo ID
- Diplomatic or embassy IDs instead of a passport
Rules that apply everywhere
- Your first and last names must match your ETS account exactly, accents aside. A middle initial is optional.
- The ID must be valid on test day. We treat an ID that expires on the exam day itself as expired.
- Bring the physical original: no photocopies, scans or photos on your phone.
- The ID must show your name, a recent photo and your signature.
Questions
Can I use my EU ID card to take the GRE in another EU country?
Yes, if the card shows your name, a recent photo, your date of birth and your signature. If any is missing, bring your passport.
